Health Visiting
Health visitors are qualified nurses who have gone on to do another year specialising in child development and health promotion. They can advise you on all aspects of development and health promotion until your child is 5 years old and their role also includes parenting and emotional wellbeing. Many health visitors have additional qualifications in a range of fields, such as midwifery and children’s nursing.
Community staff nurses and community nursery nurses work alongside health visitors. Community staff nurses are qualified nurses and many have additional experience looking after children, for example in hospitals. Community nursery nurses are experienced in child development and health promotion, including child safety.
Our role with parents starts in pregnancy when all expectant parents receive a letter from us inviting them to meet the service. Then once your baby has been born and the community midwife has discharged you, your health visitor or community staff nurse will contact you, to arrange a suitable time to come and visit you and your baby at home, or at another setting, such as a children’s centre.
Well Baby Clinics
Please drop in to one of our clinics led by a health visitor.
All drop-ins offer the chance for families to speak with a member of the health visiting team about concerns, support needs and request additional information or advice.

How the team works
Our health visitors work throughout the community. Based in health centres and GP practices, they work in teams, which include nursery nurses and community staff nurses. Nursery nurses are managed by health visitors and may help with clinic sessions.
If your GP or midwife has any concerns during your pregnancy, then a member of the health visiting team may contact you. If you would like to meet a member of the health visiting team during your pregnancy please ask at your GP surgery.
