We run an 8-week pulmonary rehabilitation programme that takes place twice a week at Surbiton Health Centre. The class is run in groups of 10 to 12 people and is led by our specialist respiratory physiotherapists and exercise technicians.
It is available to patients who have:
- chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- asthma
- interstitial lung disease (ILD)
- bronchiectasis
- patients with these diagnoses who have had a recent flare up that required hospital treatment
Our pulmonary rehabilitation team will guide you through a tailor-made programme and regularly review your progress to help you achieve your goals. You will be offered an encouraging, stimulating, and compassionate environment to further educate and learn supporting exercises to improve your overall health and condition.
Each class includes:
- warm-up, exercise session and cool down
- a talk by a healthcare professional on a topic relevant to your condition
Topics include managing your breathing, healthy eating, stress management and how to manage flair ups of your condition. It’s also a great opportunity to meet other people with lung conditions and share experiences. This is a patient-centred approach and we work with you to promote your wellbeing.
We match our exercise programmes to your ability. You'll get moderately out of breath when exercising. This is important to improve your symptoms. We'll never ask you to do more than is safe.
Benefits of Pulmonary Rehabilitation
- helping you walk further
- reducing breathlessness during daily activities, such as walking or going up stairs
- increasing your physical activity
- gaining confidence to be more active and exercise safely
- improving your quality of life
- helping manage your lung condition
- Your muscles become stronger and become better at using oxygen. This makes you less breathless and tasks become easier. You'll start to feel better and want to continue being active
- Reduced inpatient hospital stays
- The benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation last beyond the completion of the programme, evidence has suggested that they can last for over 12 months, even longer if you continue to exercise
Our team is committed to providing the highest quality of service to our community by keeping up to date with the latest developments in pulmonary rehabilitation.
