The HENRY Programme – free advice and support for Kingston families
Everyone wants the best for their children, but with so much conflicting advice it can be hard to know what to do for the best, especially in the early years. In Kingston, families can take part in a specially-designed programme to make family life easier, covering everything from fussy eating and managing behaviour, to family routines, emotional wellbeing and getting active together
Two versions
There are two versions of the programme, one for families with children under five and the other for families with children aged 5-12. It’s called HENRY (Health, Exercise, Nutrition for the Really Young) and is delivered face-to-face at local venues, and also online for families of school-aged children, making it easier for working parents to join. All sessions are free of charge.
What is the programme about?
HENRY covers a number of themes across eight sessions in a supportive, friendly environment with other people who are keen to find out more and share ideas. The sessions are for parents and carers who:
- Want to be able to respond to their children’s needs, but also have the confidence to set boundaries
- Would like some support to give their child a healthy start
- Wish their child would eat more fruit and vegetables
- Would like to reduce mealtime stress
- Would like to enjoy being active together as a family
- Are interested in ideas to get children away from the TV and other screens.
For families with school-aged children, HENRY features topics and support that will help as your child grows older, such as looking after children’s teeth, setting boundaries and issues around body image.
Everything you need is provided
Parents joining the programme receive a HENRY toolkit which includes everything they need during the sessions, along with helpful resources to use at home.
What people say about HENRY
Feedback is very positive and a common theme is the non-judgmental nature of HENRY. One parent recently said: “I didn’t feel judged at all and gained a support group and friendships. It’s been the most positive, impactful time spent and I’ve appreciated it immensely.”
The practical side of the programme is also very popular. “I’ve been cooking more and planning my meals and shopping lists better,” added another participant.
The wide range of subjects discussed in the sessions is also appreciated. One satisfied parent commented: “HENRY has become my parenting bible.”
